Foods that help in reducing and controlling diabetes

Diabetes can be a serious illness that can hamper your lifestyle extensively. And that is just the easy part. The difficult part is that it can prove to be fatal for you if not checked and taken care of. People with diabetes run the risk of Heart diseases nearly twice as much as people without it. It can also cause mental health issues such as depression. But Diabetes can be controlled with simply altering your diet to suit your condition. If you follow a strict diet regime and avoid eating food substances that can your diabetes to flare, then you can lead a healthy and safe life. 

Here is a list of a few foods that can help you control your diabetes.

Slow Release Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates affect your blood sugar tremendously in your body. Thus, you need to avoid simple carbohydrates such as pasta, white bread, rice, packages food, soda etc. On the contrary taking in slow release, High fiber Carbs can be a very good idea.   

Here is a list of carb rich foods that you should avoid: White Rice, Pasta, White Bread, Instant Packaged Foods, Instant Oat Meal and cornflakes. A few foods that can give you slow release carb include: Brown Rice, Whole Wheat Bread, High Fiber cereal, peas, sweet potatoes, cauliflowers and yams.

High Fiber Foods

High fiber food can help control the digestion and absorption of sugar in your blood and thus control blood sugar levels. High Fiber foods include vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole wheat flour and wheat bran.

Fatty Fish or Healthy Fish

Fatty fish are extremely healthy for you if you include them in your diet. Salmons, mackerels and sardines can be a good addition to your diet and have a great effect on your heart. Because diabetic people are more prone to heart diseases, therefore eating fatty fishes can improve your heart’s condition. Numerous studies suggest this relationship stating that people with fatty fish as a part of their diet, run lesser risk of having heart diseases.

Green Vegetables

Green vegetables are low in calorie and digestible carb, and thus are great dietary products for diabetic patients. Some of the common diabetic complications include cataracts and mascular degeneration in eyes. Green Vegetables are a good source of the two antioxidants; Zeaxanthin and Lutein which are quite helpful in protecting your eyes against such complications.        

Good Fats

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are great for diabetic patients as they help in decreasing the cholesterol levels in your body. Therefore, consuming foods containing these fats such as nuts like almonds, walnuts etc, Olive, Canola and Peanut oils, in limited qualities can be supremely beneficial for reducing the risk of high sugar levels.


Cinnamon is an amazing antioxidant. Numerous studies showcase cinnamon to be effective for controlling blood sugar and even reducing it. It also is helpful for reducing cholesterol levels. So, cinnamon can help you control your blood sugar but also, your sensitivity to insulin.
